RNPC MISSION: To preserve the quality of life in residential neighborhoods throughout Riverhead as well as the rural atmosphere of our Town by advocating for the protection of residential areas, open spaces and agricultural areas against uses and expansion that would negatively impact the residences and local businesses in these areas and violate the letter and intent of the Riverhead Comprehensive Plan.
The RNPC is comprised of all Riverhead hamlet civic associations and a growing number of neighborhood groups and residents. We also have close ties with local environmental groups.
Before taking on any position or initiative, the RNPC researches it to determine whether or not it is aligned with our mission and overarching principles. In most instances, the RNPC works in close conjunction with one or more of our civic and environmental partners.
We know our community clearly values the sandy beaches, rolling fields, woods, quaint hamlets, and quiet neighborhoods that make this place so special, they are all at risk, if history is any indication. Over the years, one Long Island town after another has been transformed by over-development. And there is no reason to believe that it won't happen here too, unless we band together in the belief that we have a right to determine the future of our community.
Fortunately, there are things we can do. Local government can preserve more land, abide by zoning and even improve it where it contradicts the spirit of the Comprehensive plan, enforce codes and zoning laws, heed environmental regulations, and embrace broader participation in land use decisions. And when bad decisions are made and laws broken, residents must speak up and be prepared to use the system to purse our rights.
If you care about the rural nature of Riverhead and the quality of life we derive from it then consider joining or donating to an organization dedicated to preserving these precious commodities in an area under heavy development pressure.
Our best defense against over-development and special interests is an engaged and educated public that cares. Please read, think, learn and act!!
Since its inception, the RNPC has been a strong voice against over-development in the hamlets and against business uses and expansions that violate the law and negatively impact residential neighborhoods. It has also evolved into a strident advocate for increasing government transparency and public participation as well as for improvements in in municipal processes, zoning and codes.
